فيلسوف إيطالي، وروائي وباحث في القرون الوسطى (5 يناير 1932 - 19 فبراير 2016).
يُعرف إيكو بروايته الشهيرة "اسم الوردة"، ومقالاته العديدة.
وهو أحد أهم النقاد الدلاليين في العالم.
وُلد إيكو في مدينة ألساندريا بإقليم بييمونتي، وكان أبوه جوليو مُحاسباً قبل أن تستدعيه الحكومة للخدمة في ثلاث حروب.
خلال الحرب العالمية الثانية، انتقلت أم أومبرتو، جيوفانا، مع ابنها إلى قرية صغيرة في حيد بييمونتي الجبلي.
أُخذ اسم عائلته إكو (Eco) من الحروف الأولى للعبارة اللاتينية ex coelis oblatus (هبة السماء)، ومُنح لجده (الذي كان لقيطاً) من قبل مكتب المدينة.
كان أبوه ابناً لعائلة فيها ثلاثة عشر ابناً آخرين، وحاول دفعه لأن يصبح محامياً، غير أنه انتسب إلى جامعة تورينو لدراسة فلسفة القرون الوسطى والأدب.
كتب أطروحته حول توما الأكويني، وحصل على دكتوراة في الفلسفة في 1954، وخلال هذا الوقت، هجر إيكو الكنيسة الكاثوليكية الرومانية بعد أزمة إيمان.
عمل إكو محرراً ثقافياً للتلفزيون والإذاعة الفرنسية، وحَاضَرَ في جامعة تورينو.
كما صادق مجموعة من الرسامين والموسيقيين والكتاب في الإذاعة والتلفزيون الفرنسيين الأمر الذي أثر على مهنته ككاتب فيما بعد.
خصوصاً بعد نشر كتابه الأول مشكلة الجمال عند توما الأكويني Il Problema Estetico di San Tommaso الذي كان توسعة لأطروحة الدكتوراة خاصته.
في سبتمبر 1962 تزوج ريناتي رامج، رسامة ألمانية.
فيما بعد روايته الشهيرة والمعروفة بأسم الوردة نشر سنة 1988 روايته المعروفة بندول فوكو والتي عليها وجه أيكو أزمة الدفع عن أعماله ولكن في هذا الرواية التي طرح فيها أيكو كل أفكاره حول السيمائيات ولكن ضلت هذه رواية في عزلة حتى نشر دان براون روايته شفرية دفنشي هذه تأثرة ألى حد كبير كما قال النقاد برواية أيكو بندول فوكو والتي موضعها الرائيسي هو المؤمرات الكونية ومن ثم في سنة 1994 كنات رويته التالية هي جزيرة اليوم السابق بعده سنة 2000 بودلينو وفي 2004 الشعلة الغامظة للملكه لوانا ثم تلها مقبرة براغ -نقلا عن ويكيبيديا العربية
