عالم نفس وفيلسوف إنساني ألماني أمريكي ولد في مدينة فرانكفورت -ألمانيا في 23 مارس عام 1900. هاجر إلى الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية في 1934 من أعماله :الخوف من الحرية (1941) التحليل النفسى والدين (1950) اللغة المنسية : مدخل إلى فهم الأحلام والقصص الخيالية والأساطير (1951) المجتمع العاقل (1955) رسالة سيجموند فرويد : تحليل لشخصيته وتأثيره (1959) أزمة التحليل النفسى : مقالات عن فرويد وماركس وعلم النفس الاجتماعى (1970) تشريح نزوع الإنسان إلى التدمير (1973) كما حرر كتبا، بأقلام كتاب متعددين عن بوذية زن ومفهوم ماركس للإنسان وغيرها توفي فروم في 23 مارس عام 1980.

حين نكون أيقاظاً نكون مخلوقات نشيطة عاقلة. ونقوم بأفعال ونراقب، ولربما لا نرى الأشياء من حولنا كما هي في الواقع، ولكننا قد نراها على الأقل على نحو نستطيع أن نفيد منها ونستعملها، وإننا لمهرة نتقن أعمالنا، لكننا نتفتقر في أثناء ذلك إلى الخيال. وحين ننام نستيقظ على صيغة أخرى للوجود، إننا نحلم، ونبتدع قصصاً لم تحدث قط. وتارة نعيش ونشهد أجمل الأشياء ونكون سعداء، وكثيراً مانجد أنفسنا في حالة من الخوف الشديد، ولكن أيا كان الدور الذي نقوم به في الحلم فإننا المؤلف والحلم حلمنا ونحن أوجدنا الحوادث، إننا في الحلم صانعو عالم ليس للمكان والزمان سلطان فيه.
