عالم نفس وفيلسوف إنساني ألماني أمريكي ولد في مدينة فرانكفورت -ألمانيا في 23 مارس عام 1900. هاجر إلى الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية في 1934 من أعماله :الخوف من الحرية (1941) التحليل النفسى والدين (1950) اللغة المنسية : مدخل إلى فهم الأحلام والقصص الخيالية والأساطير (1951) المجتمع العاقل (1955) رسالة سيجموند فرويد : تحليل لشخصيته وتأثيره (1959) أزمة التحليل النفسى : مقالات عن فرويد وماركس وعلم النفس الاجتماعى (1970) تشريح نزوع الإنسان إلى التدمير (1973) كما حرر كتبا، بأقلام كتاب متعددين عن بوذية زن ومفهوم ماركس للإنسان وغيرها توفي فروم في 23 مارس عام 1980.

ستكون قراءة هذا الكتاب تجربة مليئة بخيبة الأمل لأي إنسان يتوقع تعليمات سهلة في فن الحب، أن هذا الكتاب- بالعكس- يريد أن يبين أن الحب إحساسا عاطفيا يمكن للإنسان أن ينغمر فيه بسهولة من قبل أي إنسان بغض النظر عن مستوى النضج الذي وصل إليه، الكتاب يريد أن يقنع القارئ، بأن جميع محاولاته للحب مقضي عليها بالفشل ما لم يحاول محاولة أكثر فاعلية لتطوير شخصيته الكلية وذلك لكي يحقق هدفا منتجا، وذلك الإشباع للحب الفردي لا يمكن الحصول عليه بدون مقدرة على محبة الجار وبدون التواضع الحق والشجاعة والإيمان والنظام. وعندما تكون هذه الصفات في حضارة ما نادرة فإن إجتياز القدرة على الحب يجب أن تظل تحققا نادرا، أو أن أي فرد يستطيع أن يسأل نفسه كم عدد الأشخاص الودودين حقا الذين عرفهم.
ومع هذا لا يجب أن تكون صعوبة المهمة كعلة للإمتناع عن محاولة معرفة الصعوبات وكذلك الشروط الخاصة بتحقيقها ولكي أتجنب التعقيدات غير الضرورية حاولت أن أتناول المشكلة بلغة ليست فنية بقدر الإمكان، ولهذا السبب نفسه قللت إلى أقصى قدر ممكن الإحالة إلى المراجع الخاصة بأدب الحب.
وهناك مشكلة أخرى لم أجد حلا مرضيا تمام عنها وهي تجنب الأفكار التي سبق لي أن عبرت عنها في كتبي السابقة، والقارئ الأليف بكتبي وخاصة "الهروب من الحرية" و"الإنسان لنفسه"و"المجتمع السوي" سيجد في هذا الكتاب أفكار عديدة تتجاوز الأفكار التي سبق التعبير عنها وحتى الأفكار القديمة أحيانا ما تكتسب بشكل طبيعي منظورات جديدة بفضل أنها تدور كلهاحول محور واحد ألا وهو فن الحب.
