تتمحور أحداث الرواية حول "ماركوس"؛ الذي نشأ في كنف الحرمان، فلم يحمل عبء فقره الشخصي فحسب، بل صار وجدانه وعاءً لآلام كل المعذبين في الأرض.
عانى ماركوس من خذلان جميع من حوله، فبقي وحيدًا يغالب بؤسه الذي كبل طموحاته وجعله يقف عاجزًا أمام أبسط أمانيه.
ولم يتوقف الأمر عند حدود العوز والتشرد، بل قاده القدر إلى السجن ظلمًا، ليواجه وجهًا جديدًا من وجوه القهر الإنساني.
وفي غمرة هذا اليأس، يظهر السيد "تيودور دراغومير"؛ الرجل الذي أدرك بذكائه سمو عقل ماركوس، ومد له يد العون تقديرًا لرجاجة عقله، فانتشله من ضياعه ومنحه مكانًا بجانبه، ليطرأ على حياة ماركوس تحولٌ جذري لم يكن يرتجيه.
لكن، وحين ظن ماركوس أن أيامه العجاف قد ولّت، وجد نفسه أمام اختبار أعظم: إذ وجد ماركوس نفسه في مواجهة صراع داخلي أشد ضراوة، حين ملكت لُبّه "إيڤيلين"، الابنة الوحيدة لوليّ نعمته.
فبين وازع الامتنان لِوالدها وسطوة العاطفة، وبين ندوب الماضي التي تأبى الاندمال..
أي طريق سيسلك ماركوس؟ وهل سيجرؤ على قبول هذا الحب أم أن له رأيًا آخر؟
