على مدى ثلاثين عامًا، عاش رجل حياةً صُممت بأدق تفاصيلها. كل دقيقة محسوبة، كل غرام من الطعام موزون، كل شيء في مكانه. هو لا يعيش، بل ينفذ "هندسة" صارمة، مهمتها الوحيدة: العناية بجسد أبيه الصامت، ذاك الذي كان يومًا ما طاغيته وجلاده.
ولكن، هل هذه الرعاية هي قمة البر والتضحية، أم أقصى وأبرد أشكال الانتقام؟
عندما كان في الثامنة عشرة من عمره، تلقى خبر وفاة أمه. وفي اليوم نفسه، انهار جسد والده. ومنذ تلك اللحظة، وهب الراوي حياته لهذا الانتقام المقدس. انتقام لا يسفك دمًا، بل يبني سجنًا من الرحمة. سجن يكون فيه الجلاد حيًا، ولكن أسيرًا كليًا لرحمته.
لكن هندسته النفسية المعقدة تخفي وراءها جرحًا أعظم.
في ليلة عاصفة، يخرج من قبو منزله صندوقًا خشبيًا قديمًا. بداخله يجد رفيق طفولته الوحيد: طائر خشبي، شاهد صامت على كل ما حدث. وإلى جواره، ملف بني يحمل اسمه. ملف لم يقرأه قط. فيفتحه مع طائره، ويبدأان معًا رحلة تشريح لماضٍ مظلم.
يكتشف حقيقةً صاعقة: والدته، في يأسها لإنقاذه، تواصلت سرًا مع طبيب نفسي. هذا الطبيب، تحت قناع "محرر"، كان قد اخترق حياته. كان صديقه الوحيد. وكان في الوقت نفسه مهندس المؤامرة التي أعادت تشكيل قدره.
بينما تتساقط الأقنعة، يجد الراوي نفسه في مواجهة حقيقة أقسى من أي انتقام: دوافعه المظلمة، ووحشته الداخلية، وإدراكه أن الطاغية كان الوحيد الذي لم يقل له يومًا "أنت مجنون".
رواية "الطائر" هي مأساة وجودية عن رجل كرّس حياته ليكتشف، في النهاية، أن سجّانه الحقيقي لم يكن أباه، بل نفسه. إنها ليست مجرد قصة، بل وثيقة سيكولوجية نادرة، مكتوبة بلغة باردة كمشرط الجراح، ودافئة كدمعة أخيرة.
