تناول البحث أحد شعراء الأدب الأندلسي، حيث يعتبر الأدب الأندلسي حصيلة الثروة الأدبية لتلك الفترة وما أصابها من انتكاسات وفتن، فعمد الشعراء أن يوصفوا ويمدحوا ويرثوا مَن حولهم، وكان لجمال الأندلس دور مهم في إلهام الشعراء ونبوغ الفطرة الشعرية لدبهم.
استطاع ابن شهيد أن يضع بين أيدينا مادة أدبية هائلة، تصور واقع الأندلس، سواء الشعرية أم النثرية، ومن خلال البحث عملت على جوانب مهمة في حياة ابن شهيد، وكان ذلك متناغما في أجزاء البحث المختلفة، فتناولنا حياة ابن شهيد ومكانته الأدبية، وآثاره النثرية والشعرية، ونبوغه في النقد، وموازنة ما بين رسالة التوابع والزوابع ورسالة الغفران لأبي علاء المعري.
يبين البحث تفاصيل حياة ابن شهيد الأندلسي، حيث الولادة في قرطبة، ومعاناة المرض فهو قاسى من فالج نصفي إضافة إلى الصم الذي رافقه معظم حياته، كما يوضح البحث الموضوعات الشعرية التي قال فيها ابن شهيد من مدح ورثاء وهجاء ووصف وحكمة واستعطاف وغزل وشوق وحنين وغيرها من الموضوعات التي عرفها الأدب العربي.
