في بلدةٍ التفَّ حولها وادي الرِّمّة، ككائنٍ أسطوريٍّ ينفث الغبار في أوصالها كلما سخن جوفه، نشأ عبده ظلًّا باهتًا، يكاد لا يُرى.
كان صدى قيود أسلافه يتردّد في مخيّلته؛ يراها في المرآة، وفي عيون الناس، وفي موضع السجود، وحتى في الصمت الطويل.
نشأ في ظلّ أبيه، دون أن يدري: هل ورث عنه اسمه، أم قيده؟ وهل تحرّر حقًا من سلاسل الحديد، أم استبدل القيد بالفكرة؟
قادَه القدر إلى محرابٍ جديد، ونارٍ أخرى. هناك، بين رفوف الغبار، نبش كتب الذين طرحوا السؤال ( لماذا) ، وقرأ دفاتر من تمرّدوا على الأرباب الصغيرة.
صار السؤال معبده، وأضحت الأحرف نهرًا يجري بين أنامله. وحين حاول الارتواء، وجد نفسه غارقًا في بحرٍ أحادي الاتجاه، ذابت جهاته في جهةٍ واحدة…ظنّها جهة الخلاص.
وفي آخر المطاف، استرق نظرةً إلى الخلف، فلم يجد سوى رماد الأسئلة، تذروه رياح خريف العمر في عيون العابرين.
