اللوح الزمردي - كشف السر. يبدأ كتاب "السر" بمقتطف من ثماني كلمات يُنسب إلى اللوح الزمردي، الذي يعود تاريخه إلى حوالي 3000 قبل الميلاد: و تُركز الفلسفة الهرمسية على هرمس تريسميجيستوس، الذي تعود أسطورته إلى آلاف السنين في مصر القديمة. وكما هو الحال مع العديد من الشخصيات التاريخية والدينية من العصور القديمة، تشابك الإنسان والأسطورة بشكل لا يُصدق، مما ترك لنا روايات عرضة للتأويل والمبالغة وأخطاء الترجمة والرفض القاطع. يبدو أن هرمس تريسميجيستوس هو مزيج بين الإله المصري تحوت والإله اليوناني هرمس. لقب "ثلاثي العظمة" يعني "ثلاثي العظمة"، ويشير إلى الفروع الثلاثة القديمة لحكمة الكون - الخيمياء، والتنجيم، والثيورجيا - التي امتلكها هرمس ثلاثي العظمة ونقلها. يُقال إن لوح الزمرد كان في الأصل لوحًا أخضر غامضًا من الحجر أو البلورة، كُتبت عليه صيغة روحية مشفرة بإيجاز وبنقش بارز.
