يعتبر هذا الكتاب مساهمة هامة في التعريف بيورغن هابرماس الذي، رغم ترداد اسمه، لا يزال غريباً إلى حد كبير على القارئ العربي.
وكاتب هذا الكتاب، الذي هو باحث في مركز دراسات الشرق المعاصر وفي مركز تاريخ دراسات الفكر المعاصر، هو أيضاً من القلائل الذين اهتموا بفكر هذا الفيلسوف وكرسوا له سنوات طويلة من عمرهم. كما أن الموضوع الذي يتناوله يمثل عرضاً لفكر واحد من أبرز الفلاسفة الذين أثروا في تفكير معاصرينا منذ الستينات ولا يزال.
هناك في اعتقادي ثلاثة عناصر أساسية تبرر اهتمام بفكر هابرماس والحماس للتعريف به في بيئتنا العربية المعاصرة.
العنصر الأول، هو الطابع التوجيهي الذي تتميز به فلسفة هابرماس وسعيه المستمر إلى ربط النظرية بالممارسة.
العنصر الثاني، هو النظرية النقدية التي تبناها هابرماس وأعاد بناءها، والتي انطلقت من نقد الآثار السلبية للفلسفة الوضعية والعلموية، تلك الفلسفة التي تحولت في نظر مدرسة فرانكفورت إلى تبرير إيديولوجي للعقلانية الخاصة بالرأسمالية، أي لتبرير نظام قائم على الضبط العقلاني من أجل تعميم السيطرة وزيادة مردود رأس المال. وهي الفلسفة التي قادت إلى أزمة الحداثة.
العنصر الثالث، هو مفهوم الفضاء العمومي. ويشكل هذا المفهوم الذي هو من اختراع الفيلسوف الألماني كانط مفتاح الممارسة الديمقراطية في نظر هابرماس الذي عمم استخدامه منذ السبعينات من القرن الماضي. وهو يعرفه كدائرة التوسط بين المجتمع المدني والدولة. فهو الفضاء المفتوح الذي يجتمع فيه الأفراد لصوغ رأي عام والتحول بفضله وعبره إلى مواطنين تجمعهم آراء وقيم وغايات واحدة.
تشكل هذه المفاهيم الثلاثة أدوات لا غنى عنها في نظري لأي مراجعة جدية نقوم بها اليوم لإعادة بناء نظم المعرفة والتفكير والعمل لدينا، تلك النظم التي ظهر فسادها وعجزها عن استيعاب قوى المجتمعات العربية النامية وبالأحرى عن تنظيم حركتها في حقبة الانفتاح الراهنة بين الثقافات وتوسع دائرة الفضاء المشترك بين الحضارات. وهي مفاهيم ضرورية أيضاً للتقدم في صوغ أي رؤية نقدية لمشاريع الإصلاح العربية التي لا تزال تنتظر النور.
