تُشكّل ذكرى استقلال زامبيا فرصة مناسبة لتقييم التقدم والقيود التي طرأت على البلاد بعد التاريخ الاستعماري لها. ومن المعروف أن زامبيا، مثلها مثل أغلب البلدان الإفريقية المُحرَّرة من الاستعمار، ورثت عند استقلالها عن بريطانيا في عام 1964م ما وصفه بعض المراقبين بـ”التأريخ ذي العقلية الاستعمارية”. وكان من بين كبار كاتبي هذا التأريخ علماء الأنثروبولوجيا والمؤرخون الأوروبيون.
وكان علماء الأنثروبولوجيا الأوروبيون روّادًا في إجراء الدراسات التي كشفت عن طبيعة المجتمعات الإفريقية وتنظيمها وأبرزتها. وبشكلٍ جماعي، وَلَّد هؤلاء العلماء المعرفة الأكاديمية اللازمة لفهم طبيعة المجتمعات الإفريقية وآليات عملها. وساعدت هذه المعرفة السلطات الاستعمارية على تطوير الأنظمة الإدارية التي كانت تأمل من خلالها أن تحكم الأفارقة بفعالية.
