يتناول الكتاب قصة شاب نشأ في ريف مصر يتيمًا لم ير أمه, يتعلق بزوجة أبيه حين يكبر ويعلم أنها ليست أمه, ويغار عليها من كل مَن حولها خاصة بعد وفاة أبيه, ويكاد من فرط الحب يحسب نفسه زوجها وتحسبه معشوقها. لكن الأقدار تفرق بينهما بسبب اعتدائه بالضرب حتى الموت لرجل غازلها وحاول الاعتداء عليها. تحكم عليه محكمة الجنايات بالإيداع بالمصحة النفسية لاضطراب قواه العقلية وعد مسئوليته عن الجريمة. وهناك يرى أعاجيب الزمن بين المرضى, كما رأى من قبل لأعاجيب وسط حياة الريف المترعة بالخضرة والأمل واليأس ايضًا
