قال أبو حاتم البستي (تـ 354هـ) " اللسان فيه عشر خصال يجب على العاقل أن يعرفها ، ويضع كل خصلة في موضعها ، هو أداةٌ يظهر بها البيان ، وشاهدٌ يُخبر عن الضمير، وناطقٌ يرد به الجواب ، وحاكمٌ يفصل به الخطاب ، وشافعٌ تدرك به الحاجات ، وواصف تعرف به الأشياء ، وحاصدٌ يُذهب الضغينة ، ونازع يجذب المودة ، ومسل يُذكي القلوب ، ومعز تُردُ به الأحزان "
