هذا الكتاب، يشرح بالتفصيل حياة تشارلز داروين، والذي نُشر بعد خمس سنوات من وفاته، قام بتحريره ابنه فرانسيس، الذي كان متعاونًا مع والده في تجارب علم النبات والذي تولى بعد وفاته مسؤولية الإشراف على نشر ما تبقى من أعماله ورسائله المخطوطة. في مقدمة المجلد الأول، يشرح فرانسيس داروين مبادئه التحريرية: "في اختيار الرسائل للنشر، استرشدت إلى حد كبير بالرغبة في توضيح شخصية والدي الشخصية. لكن حياته كانت في الأساس حياة عمل، لدرجة أنه لا يمكن كتابة تاريخ الرجل دون متابعة مسيرة المؤلف عن كثب. من بين تاريخ العائلة وحكايات وذكريات الزملاء العلميين، يوجد مقال قصير عن سيرته الذاتية كتبه تشارلز داروين لأبنائه وأحفاده، وليس للنشر. هذه الرواية عن داروين الرجل لم تكن أفضل من أي وقت مضى.
