كان أول كتاب لهارت هو "المائة: تصنيف لأكثر الأشخاص تأثيرًا في التاريخ" (1978)، والذي بيع منه أكثر من ألف نسخة وتمت ترجمته إلى العديد من اللغات. وكان أول شخص في قائمة هارت هو محمد ، الذي اختاره على يسوع أو موسى .
