يُعَدُّ هذا الكتاب محاولة لفهم قضية التنمية المستدامة من منظور فلسفي، حيث تَعرَّض المؤلف إلى مناقشة العلاقة بين الإنسان والتنمية والمجتمع، والنظر في علاقة التنمية بالثورات الصناعية المعاصرة، وكذلك النظر في السياسات الاقتصادية التي تطرحها هذه العلاقة ضمن ميدان فلسفي، ومحاولة التأسيس لمفاهيم تنموية، ويعني المؤلف بهذا الحاجة إلى تلبية احتياجات الحاضر دون المساس بقدرة الأجيال المستقبلية على تلبية حاجاتها، وإلى تغيير أنماط الحياة السائدة التي لا تزال تنتهجها الدول الناشئة، وكذلك الحاجة إلى عصر جديد من النمو الاقتصادي يتَّصِف بالقوة والاستدامة اجتماعيًّا وبيئيًّا.
