بعد توحيد إيطاليا و عمل دستور لها فى عام 1861 ، وجدت الماسونية نفسها في مواجهة مع المشاكل الاقتصادية والاجتماعية الهائلة التي ابتليت بها البلاد. و في الواقع ، لم تستطع تلك المنظمة الفتية الاعتماد على أسس متينة ، لأنها ولدت ضد إرادة الكنيسة الكاثوليكية و خاصة أن غالبية السكان لم يشاركوا في منظمة حركة اعادة البناء.
و يحلل الكتاب مشاركة الماسونية الإيطالية في المجال التعليمي. بين عامي 1868 و 1925 حيث شجعت المحافل الخاصة على طاعة محفل الشرق الكبير لإيطاليا ودعمت العديد من المؤسسات في ثلاث مدن رئيسية: هم تورينو و ميلانو و روما. وهي مراكز حضرية تختلف عن بعضها البعض ولكنها تتميز بعدد كبير من المبادرات المطبقة والرغبة في تجربة نماذج تعليمية جديدة لمصفوفة علمانية (التربويين والمعاهد ومراكز الترفيه والمدارس المسائية والجامعات الشعبية).
