تقول الأسطورة: أن بوذا قد جمع كل الحيوانات وطلب أن يقابل كل حيوان في عام محدد ليلبي مطالبه، ولم يستجب للدعوة سوى أثنى عشر حيوانًا، فأنعم بوذا على كل حيوان بإطلاق اسمه على عام محدد، وتوثر صفات هذا الحيوان على مواليد تلك السنة. في الأساطير الصينية القديمة هناك أكثر من قصة حول الأبراج الصينية وترتيبها.
تشرح سيدة الأعمال الصينية (شاو- لان)، أن الأبراج الصينية هي دورة من 12 سنة، مسماة بأسماء الحيوانات- وفي الغالب لهذا علاقة بعبادة الحيوانات في الصين- تبدأ بالفأر وتنتهي بالخنزير، وليس لها أي علاقة بالمجموعات النجمية، كما الحال في الأبراج الإغريقية والرومانية، الصينيون كوَّنوا الأبراج الصينية بناءً على نظرية معقّدة مرتبطة بما يعرف باليانغ وهي الطاقة المؤدية لحدوث أي شيء في الحياة.
