كان دون كيشوت مفتونًا جدًا بقراءة روايات الفروسية لدرجة أنه قرر أن يصبح فارسًا ضالًا ويتابع مغامرات جريئة، برفقة مرافقه سانشو بانزا الماكر. و بينما يتجولون حول العالم معًا، يقودهم خيال كيشوت المسن إلى الضلال الشديد، ويميلون إلى طواحين الهواء، ويقاتلون مع الرهبان، ويشوهون المناظر الطبيعية الريفية الإسبانية ويحولوها إلى خيال من الحصون التي لا يمكن اختراقها والسحرة الأشرار. وفي الوقت نفسه، تنمو العلاقة بين الرجلين في دقة مذهلة. و غالبًا ما تعتبر دون كيشوت أول رواية حديثة، وهي عبارة عن هزلية رائعة للأدب الشعبي الذي كان بطل الرواية فيها المضطرب مهووسًا به.
