حركة التمرد المسلح فى إقليم ظفار العماني، والتي انطلقت منذ عام 1965م، تعد واحدة من أطول محاولات الثورة العربية، حيث امتدت زهاء ما يقارب من عشرة أعوام، وقد واكبت حقبة الثورات التحررية من الاستعمار العالمي، وعلى الرغم من أنها كانت في بداية ظهورها ذات اتجاهات معتدلة؛ إلا إن تطور الأحداث السياسية فى منطقة الخليج العربي -مع نهاية حقبة الستينيات من القرن العشرين- كان له أثره في تحولها إلى حركة ذات طابعٍ شمولي ماركسي، مما هدد استقرار دول منطقة الخليج العربي، واستقرار مضيق هرمز الاستراتيجي، من هذا المنطلق أعلن الشاه محمد رضا بهلوى ضرورة التدخل فى عُمان، لحمايتها من السقوط فى براثن الشيوعية الدولية.
