ABSTRACT
The Syrian conflict, which began in 2011, has led to a prolonged crisis with deep political, social, and economic ramifications. As the country contemplates a post-Assad transition, the role of public discourse becomes crucial in shaping a democratic and inclusive future. In this context, Jürgen Habermas’ theory of the public sphere offers a valuable framework for understanding how open dialogue and civic engagement can contribute to political transformation. His concept emphasizes the importance of rational-critical debate in forming public opinion and legitimizing governance. However, applying this theory to Syria presents significant challenges, including sectarian divisions, authoritarian legacies, and external geopolitical influences. Despite these obstacles, fostering public space—both physical and digital—could play a pivotal role in rebuilding civil society, promoting reconciliation, and ensuring participatory governance. This article explores the relevance of Habermas’ theory to Syria’s transitional phase, examining its potential applications and the structural barriers that may hinder the development of an effective public sphere.
