"سعى إبن طفيل أن يقدم لنا نموذجاً عن الحالة الفطرية للإنسان، وحاجته لتجاوز الأسئلة التي تراود عقله بالعثور على إجابات منطقية لها. وكان ذلك عبر أسطورة تحكي عن "حي بن يقظان" وهو وليد سيّدة رفض أخوها الملك أن يزوجها ، فأحبت رجلاً وأنجبت منه، فاضطرت إلى التخلّص من الرضيع بأن وضعته داخل صندوق ألقته في البحر، ليصل الصندوق إلى جزيرة منعزلة، فتجده ظبية تأخذه وتربيه. وبعد أن هرمت الظبية وماتت لم يكن "حي بن يقظان" يعرف ماهية الموت بعد، ليكون السبب الأول في بزوغ اسئلته الكثيرة والتي تمحورت حول "الموجد واجب الوجود".
بهذه العبارات تقدم رنا قواسمي قصة ابن طفيل المعروفة بـ "حي بن يقظان" لتشكل بطاقة تعريفية عن هذه القصة بهدف تقديم قراءة تأويلية للنص ورصد تفصيلات فداحة الموقف فيما يتعلق بالأم التي تخلت عن إبنها كما يوحي بذلك سياق النص، فشخصية حي بن يقظان تنتقل من الحضور الحركي الفعلي، للبحث والسؤال عن معنى الوجود، وقد صب إبن طفيل في هذه القصة آراءه الفلسفية القائلة "بعدم التعارض بين العقل والشريعة أو بين الفلسفة والدين في قالب روائي". وبهذا المعنى تمثل القصة أهمية الخبرة الحسية والفطرة في معرفة حقائق الكون والوجود والتأمل فيها، كما أن القصة يمكن قراءتها بأكثر من وجهة نظر.
