لا أعتقد أن كل ردود الأفعال تلك قد أمر بها أحدهم أو على الأقل أوحى بها، صرخ شابٌ لا أعرفه قائلاً: "أقتلني يا سيدنا... خذني يا سيدنا... أتوسل إليك أعطني خنجرك.." وتردد صراخه بمئات الأفواه، يردحون كما في حلقات المجاذيب: "اقتلنا... أعطنا خنجرك... أقتلنا يا سيدنا".
وصاح شاب آخر جارح الصوت: "هذه حباً بك يا سيدنا..."، وتشلبط السور بخفة قط، وألقى نفسه إلى عمق الوادي السحيق، نظرت كالمشدوه من موقعي على السور إلى جسده يتمزق على الصخور المسننة وهو يسقط من ذلك الإرتفاع الشاهق بسرعة هائلة، ثم وهو يتدحرج إلى القاع كتل لحم وردي، سرعان ما انحط إليها نسرٌ رمادي، كان يطوف في الوادي...
فجأة سمعت بين الجمع من يناديني باسمي، كانت زوجتي، تجأر بألم، وتتوسلني أن أعيد ولديها إلى الحياة!...
تلفت حولي، صُدمت بعيني الدهدار اليقينيتين الصارمتين، وبنظرة القصراني البليغة في تعبيرها عن وحشية هذا الكائن الموغل في الحيوانية، عندما نظرت مرة أخرى إلى الستارة الحريرية البراقة لم أر من خلالها شيئاً، رأيت فحسب راية ترفرف في الأعلى، وتقود الناس إلى المهلكة، بقلوب راضية... هل أصابني الجنون أنا أيضاً؟!...
هبطت الدرج مذعوراً، وأسرعت نحو غرفتي متعثراً، وأعتقد أني لمحت بثينة، تبكي بلا دموع، وتودُّ لو تحتضنني...
