إن كتاب علم اجتماع الفراغ هو دراسة تحليلية مقارنة في أوقات الفراغ والترويح وكيفية استثمارها من قبل الفئات العمرية المختلفة في المجتمع. يحتوي الكتاب على ثلاثة عشر فصلاً متكاملاً ومترابطاً ترابطاً علمياً موضوعياً، حيث يتناول الفصل الأول موضوع علم الاجتماع والعلوم الأخرى وهو دراسة مدخلية لعلم الاجتماع، الفصل الثاني يعرّف علم اجتماع الفراغ وطبيعته وأهدافه ومشكلاته والعوامل التي ادت إلى استقلاليته عن علم الاجتماع العام، والفصل الثالث من الكتاب يدور حول مفهوم الفراغ والترويح ويدرس الخصائص العامة للفراغ والترويح، أما الفصل الرابع فيتعلق بدرساة المشكلات الاجتماعية والحضارية لاستثمار أوقات الفراغ، والفصل الخامس يتناول واقع أنشطة الفراغ في دول أوروبا الغربية ودور أوروبا الاشتراكية، في حين يتخصص الفصل السادس بدراسة واقع أنشطة الفراغ في العراق، أما الفصل السابع للكتاب فيدرس أنشطة فراغ الشباب في العراق بين الواقع والطموح، ويتناول الفصل الثامن دراسة واقع الأنشطة الترويحية عند الشباب الجامعي، والفصل التاسع يهتم بدراسة المشكلات الاجتماعية والترويحية عند الشباب، أما الفصل العاشر فيتعلق بالعوامل الاجتماعية لعزوف الطالبات عن المشاركة في الألعاب الرياضية، والفصل الحادي عشر يدور حول دراسة فراغ المسنين والمتقاعدين، ويعالج الفصل الثاني عشر من الكتاب موضوع الخدمة الاجتماعية في مجال الترويج مع إشارة خاصة للبرامج الترويحية، وأخيراً يدور الفصل الثالث عشر حول التوصيات والمقترحات التي يمكن اعتمادها إزاء مشكلات استثمار وقت الفراغ.
