تُجبرنا حدود "الواحد" ووطأته أن نُعامل كل مقدّس بإعتباره "مفهوماً"، أي قابلاً لأي تعريف آخر، مستعداً للإنتفاء في أية لحظة، وناقصاً على الدوام... كشيء غير ممتلئ وغير منتهِ، بل هو جزء من تاريخ ما، وجزء من مهمّة ما يؤدّيها، وكل هذه التصوّرات تهزّ وتخلخل نزعة تمركز المقدّس بالطبع.
في هذا الكتاب، يعود الباحث عبد الهادي عبد الرحمن ليواصل جدله - الحادّ أحياناً - حول نزعات التمركز في الأديان خصوصاً، فيرى أن نزعة تمركزنا في الحاضر ليست إلاّ استمراراً لنزعة التمركز في الإسلام الذي كان بدوره إستمراراً لنزعة تمركز العرب قبل الإسلام حول الكعبة، ككل عملية تاريخية تتشكّل فيها هويةٌ ما.
ويرى أن التنوّع المتروك لنا زائف ومضلّل لأنه مجرد تكرار للواحد الذي يصبح، في المحصلة النهائية، نوعاً من الثنائيات التي نراها حولنا في كل شيء، من السياسة وحتى الألعاب الرياضية!.
إن مفهوم "المقدّس" مجرد شبكة علاقات، وإن الهوية بالمقدّس إن هي إلا وهم، وهذا ما يكشفه لنا الكتاب بإختصار، كما يفضح ضلال علاقة الفكر الغربي المعاصر بجذور اليهودية والمسيحية، ويناقش علاقة المقدّس بجذور الإنسان البيولوجية، ويجول في تواريخ المقدّس القديم والحديث، وبشخّص مأزق الحضارة المعاصرة في تحوّل الثقافة إلى دين بدلاً من إعتبار الدين جزءاً من حاوية ثقافية اكثر رحابة...
