يُعتبر كتاب "تاريخ ثغر عدن" من كتب التاريخ المهمة جداً، فيه من الفوائد التي لا تُعد ولا تحصى، بل يمكن القول أنه أصبح من الكتب النادرة القليلة التي لا يستطيع طلبة العلم والباحثون المشتغلون بالتراجم والتاريخ؛ الإستغناء عنه بحال من الأحوال.
يُقسم هذا الكتاب إلى قسمين: القسم الأول: في ذكر شيء مما جاء فيها من الآيات والأحاديث والآثار والأشعار، وغير ذلك من ذكرها، وذكر سورها، ومشهور دورها، وباب برها، وما ينسب إليها مما هو حواليها من الأماكن والمواطن، نذكر مثالاً قوله (ص): "نار تخرج من قعرة عدن" ويقال: إن هذه النار تخرج من البئر التي في جبل صيرة وإنها موجودة الآن وكامنة فيه وإن بعضهم في زمن قريب من عصرنا أدلى فيها حبلاً فخرج طرفه محترقاً".
القسم الثاني: في ذكر تراجم من نشأ بها أو وردها من العلماء، والصُّلحاءِ، والملوك، والأمراء، والتجار، والوزراء، وقد جاء أسماء المترجمين على نسق حروف المعجم، وتضمنت شرحاً متفيضاً لــ (322) اسم مترجم من أعلام تلك الفترة، نذكر منهم: 1-أبو إبان والد الحكم بن أبان، 2-أبو إسحاق إبراهيم بن أحمد بن أسعد، 3-أبو إسحاق إبراهيم بن أحمد بن عبد الله، 4-أبو إسحاق إبراهيم بن إدريس إلى آخر مترجم ورقمه (322) وهو "أبو محمد يونس بن يحيى بن أبي الحسن بن البركات" الإمام الشريف النسيب الهاشمي البغدادي المحدث، قرأ صحيح البخاري على الحافظ أبي الوقت عبد الأول بن عيسى بن شعيب السجْزي الصوفي الهروي ببغداد.
-"تاريخ ثغرن عدن" من أهم كتب علم التاريخ، "الذي فوائده لا تُعد ولا تحصى، وهو بحر الدر والمرجان، لا يحيط بمنافعه نطاق التحديد والتبيان، وفيه عجائب الملك والملكوت، وفيه إيصال إلى جناب الحق ذي العظمة والجبروت" الكلام للإمام الكافيجي في مقدمة كتابه "لمختصر في علم التاريخ" نورده للدلالة على أهمية علم التاريخ للوصول إلى الحقيقة التي يبتغيها كل مشتغل بهذا الحقل.
