لقد نشأ الفكر الجغرافي مع نشأة الإنسان على سطح الأرض حينما بدأ يكوِّن لنفسه حضارةً عليها، ويتأمل الظواهر الكونية الطبيعية والبشرية ويحاول الإهتداء إلى التعرف على كنه أسرارها، ويراقب السماء وما فيها من نجوم وكواكب، ويتطلع إلى البحار والمحيطات ليتعرف على سواحلها وأمواجها وما فيها من مد وجزر.
ومع مرور الزمن أخذ "الفكر الجغرافي" في التطور حسب المراحل الحضارية إبتداء من عصور ما قبل التاريخ، عندما استطاعت شعوب ذات حضارة أن ترسي قواعد ومبادئ في هذا الفكر ومنهم السومريون والأكاديون والبابليون في العراق، والحضارة المصرية القديمة في مصر، والفينيقيون على الساحل الشرقي للبحر المتوسط، ثم شعوب أخرى كونت لنفسها حضارة بعد ذلك منهم الإغريق والرومان.
وعندما استطاع العرب أن ينشئوا دولة عربية إسلامية امتدت على مساحة شاسعة من العالم القديم من سواحل المحيط الأطلسي في إفريقيا وحتى الصين وجنوبي شرق آسيا في القارة الآسيوية.
وتلا ذلك إهتمام خاص بالفكر الجغرافي الحديث مما أدى إلى ظهور مدارس جغرافية في العديد من الدول الأوروبية، وكونت تلك الأفكار مدارس الجغرافية في الفترة الحديثة.
وقد نجم عن كل ذلك إهتمام خاص بالفكر الجغرافي المعاصر، مما كون نواة للدراسات والمناهج الجغرافية في وقتنا الحاضر؛ ولحاجة المكتبة العربية إلى كتاب يتناول تلك الموضوعات يبحث يستقصي هذا التاريخ الطويل وبنظرة معمقة فكان هذا الكتاب الذي جاء في أربعة فصول وفق ما يلي: الفصل الأول: "الجغرافية في العصور القديمة"، الفصل الثاني: "الفكر الجغرافي العربي الإسلامي"، الفصل الثالث: "الجغرافية الحديثة"، الفصل الرابع: "الجغرافية المعاصرة".
