The Handbook of Gynecology & Obstetrics is a completely new handbook. It is current, concise, and clinically relevant. Expert faculty, clinicians, and residents have collaborated to provide pertinent and practical information for the reader. Each chapter includes a list of suggested readings for further in-depth study.
The Handbook has been written in a unique format with greater emphasis on gynecology. This break from tradition reflects the importance of gynecology in virtually all aspects of medical training and practice. The majority of students, residents, and practitioners care for female patients, and therefore a broad understanding of gynecology is essential. The Handbook is a superb resource covering subjects in general gynecology, endocrinology, infertility, and gynecologic oncology. Specifically, evaluation and management of common clinical problems such as the abnormal Pap smear, ectopic pregnancy, pelvic mass, and sexually transmited diseases are reviewed. Issues pretaining to the nature woman are contained in chapters on menopause, urinary incontinence, and pelvic relaxation. Also included are current topics on women and AIDS and ethical issues in women's health care.
The Handbook is also an ideal quick reference for major topics and problems in obstetrics. It was written with the reader in mind, whether that user is a medical student, nurse practitioner or midwife, resident or family physician. The unique maternal demands of pregnancy and the dynamics of the evolving fetal compartment are reviewed in the chapters on physiology and fetoplacental development. The focus of the clinician's early assessment of the pregnant patient is addressed in the chapters on prenatal care and genetic screening. While the vast majority of pregnancies proced to tern without difficulty, the clinician can also be challenged to manage the wide range of complications that may attend pregnancy. The Handbook provides a current resource for the major obstetric, surgical, and medical complications of pregnancy including multipe gestation, placenta previa and abruption, hypertensive disorders, and infectious diseases. The application of new technologies to the estimation of fetal well-being is considered in the chapters on antepartum fetal assessment. Finally, the clumination of pregnancy, the emergence of the newborn infant throught the process of labor and dlivery, is presented with an overview of the physiologic return to the non-pregnant state in the post-partum period.
The Handbook of Gynecology & Obstetrics was envisioned, in theory, to be a rapid and informative reference for the novice clinician in the area of women's health care. It is hoped that, in practice, it will complement and foster the clinical development of a provider of health care to women.
