The wafd is an historical study of egyptian political development from world war I to the 1952 revolution the work focuses on the wafd party and its key leaders who were largely responsible for the direction of egyptian political life throughout this crucial period the study delineates the continued conflict between egyptian nationalist interests and british imperial interests' the work also traces the complex rivalry of the wafd, the monarchy and movements for hegenomy over the egyptian polity. The author utilizes both british and egyptian sources in order to reach a balanced perspective of the wafd's contributions and failures. Included in the work is information based upon numerous interviews with egyptians who were personally involved in the wafd its successes and defeats. The impact of various social movements such as the emancipation of women, development of workers movements, and student activism is also described. The question as to whether the wafd was actually a revolutionary party or a bourgeois nationalist party is scrutinized. The author concludes that 1919 was probably the only real revolution that egypt has experienced in modern times, but that the wafd merely emerged out of that time and did not create or ultimately achieve the gaals of the 1919 revotution. Finally, the work traces the short lived history of the wafdist revival, noting its similarities and differences from the original and its perhaps inevitable curtailment by anwar sadat.
