In this book, the humans meet their first aliens, the friendly reptilian Ringulian people. Next come the Kalesians, willing to share their space technology with the humans. The Ringulians live on Jupiter's ice moon 'Europa'. The Kalesians live on the planetoid, rocky world of 'Pluto'.
The humans then hear from the Gloshans. They are sinister, brutal space pirates, who decide to wage a space war against the Earth people, the Ringulians and Kalesians. The humans are terrified, knowing that they do not have enough spaceships to protect themselves. Then on the scene come the Sikarans. They are humanoid aliens with special talents, which they use to help vulnerable aliens. The Sikarans are powerful telepaths with high E.S.P. ratings, and psychic abilities. A group of Sikaran soldiers join the Earth Starship McBride. They are from the Sikaran special forces, the Isithan, and are led by Shield Lord Marayshan, Head of the Isithan.
