Joseph Sultan is a widely read writer, journalist, translator, and cultural researcher whose books and cultural projects have reached readers across the Middle East and Europe. Known for his work in literary translation and cultural promotion, Sultan has built a public career around introducing important European heritage to Arabic-speaking audiences.
He first gained recognition through his multilingual books on Portuguese culture and history, including Here is Portugal, هنا البرتغال, and Португалія тут і зараз. His works have been read widely across international audiences and helped present Portugal’s cultural identity to readers beyond its borders. Sultan also translated and adapted several major Portuguese classics into Arabic, including works associated with Eça de Queirós, Camilo Castelo Branco, and Almeida Garrett, becoming one of the prominent voices bringing Portuguese literary heritage to Arab readers.
As a journalist, Sultan founded Portugal em Árabe, a weekly cultural publication dedicated to Portuguese heritage, tourism, and cultural news for Arabic-speaking audiences. His work has received recognition for its role in promoting culture, literature, and international understanding.
With أساطير الأرض السمراء: خمسون حكاية من الفلكلور الصربي, Sultan now turns his cultural mission toward Serbia. Through his Arabic translation of selected Serbian folk tales from Srpske narodne pripovijetke, the classic collection associated with Vuk Stefanović Karadžić, he introduces Serbian folklore, oral literature, and national heritage to a new international readership.
This work forms part of Sultan’s broader commitment to promoting Serbia globally. By translating Serbian classics into Arabic, writing about Serbian culture, and presenting Serbian heritage to readers in the Arab world, Joseph Sultan positions Serbia within a wider international literary conversation and helps build lasting cultural bridges between Serbia, the Balkans, and the Middle East.
